Setting up email (POP3/IMAP) on your Galaxy S3 or S5

by James Cottis

Due to a recent software update you can no longer setup email on the Galaxy S3 or S5 using the default mail app.

However all is not lost as using an app from the Google Play Store K-9 Mail will allow you to receive your email on your smartphone. The same applies for most Android devices.

Once downloaded open the email client. If it doesn't immediately prompt you to add an account, then press Menu -> More -> Accounts. Press Menu again -> Add Account:

Fill in the following details:

Username: <your email address>
Password: <your email password>

IMAP Setup

Press Manual Setup
Select IMAP (For POP3 move to next section) and fill in these details:

  • Username: <email address>
  • Password: <password>
  • IMAP Server: mail.your domain.com
  • Security: None
  • Authentication: PLAIN
  • Port: 143
  • Auto-detect IMAP namespace: Untick
  • IMAP path prefix: <leave empty>
  • Compression: 3 ticks by default

Select Next to move onto sending emails (SMTP setup)

  • Port: 587
  • Require Sign-in: Tick
  • Authentication: PLAIN

  • Password: <your email password>

Assign a name for the account, and you're done.
